Background
The Center for Public Health at the University of Pennsylvania sits at the intersection the field itself occupies: research, training, and practice. It spans degree programs, training tracks, faculty across schools, community partnerships, and public scholarship: a federated organization wearing one name.
University centers have a distinctive web problem: they are simultaneously one thing to the outside world and many things internally, and their sites are maintained by academic staff, not web teams.
Challenge
The site had to communicate a coherent identity for the Center while supporting deep program-specific content for students, faculty, and outside collaborators. The failure modes are well-known on university sites: either central control that makes every program page a bottleneck, or program autonomy that fragments the Center into inconsistent sub-sites within a semester.
The editorial reality made it harder: faculty, events, news, and program information published by people whose job is public health, not web production. Layout decisions couldn't be part of publishing.
Approach
Nikkio worked with Yes& as senior engineer on the Drupal implementation. Content was modeled so each program maintains its own editorial space (its people, curriculum, news, and events) while the public experience presents one unified Center. Structure does the branding: shared templates and taxonomies keep program content consistent without asking editors to think about consistency.
Publishing was standardized around the entities a center actually has (faculty, events, news, programs) so that adding a seminar or a new faculty member is a form, not a design task. The system's opinionation is the feature: editors make content decisions, the platform makes layout decisions.
Results
Each program has a clean home within a unified Penn Public Health presence, and the site scales with the Center's research and educational footprint: new programs and initiatives slot into the model instead of forking it.
Academic staff publish routinely without web-production overhead, which is the quiet test of a university platform: the site stays current because updating it is easy enough to actually happen.
