Background
The CEO Roundtable on Cancer was founded at the request of President George H.W. Bush, who challenged executives to do something bold about cancer within their own companies. The answer became the Cancer Gold Standard: an accreditation for employers that meet a rigorous set of criteria for reducing cancer risk and supporting employees: prevention, screening, quality care, and research participation.
A certification is only as credible as its process. The Gold Standard's value to the employers who earn it rests entirely on the rigor of the evaluation behind it.
Challenge
The application process is detailed, multi-step, and panel-reviewed: employers document their practices against the criteria, submissions move through review stages, auditors evaluate evidence, and awards are granted, or not. Moving that workflow online is where rigor usually leaks out. Web forms drift toward simplification; review stages collapse into email threads; the audit trail dissolves.
The platform had to support applicants through a demanding process without softening it, support reviewers through structured evaluation, and preserve the full record of how each certification was earned, while remaining operable by a small program team as criteria evolved.
Approach
Nikkio served as consultant and lead engineer from initial planning through delivery and beyond. The platform was built on Drupal with custom workflow modeling as its core: applicant intake, criteria-by-criteria documentation, multi-stage review, audit, and award as explicit workflow states with their own permissions, evidence requirements, and transitions. The software encodes the process rather than approximating it.
Because certification programs evolve, the criteria and workflow definitions were built to be maintained: when the program refined its standards or reviewer procedures, the platform followed without re-engineering. Post-launch, Nikkio stayed engaged through iterations on criteria, reviewer workflows, and reporting as the program grew.
Results
The platform has carried multiple cohorts of employer applicants through the Gold Standard certification process end to end, intake to award, and continues to evolve with the program. Review panels work through structured evaluation instead of document email chains, and every certification carries its complete audit trail.
The multi-year engagement pattern repeated here: the platform launched, and the relationship continued because the system kept fitting the program as the program changed.
