Background
The Aluminum Association represents the U.S. aluminum industry to policymakers, media, and the public: the organization a congressional staffer, a journalist, or a supply-chain analyst goes to for the authoritative number. Its output is unusually varied for a communications team of its size: economic statistics, policy briefs, sustainability reporting, technical standards, member services, and events.
For an association, the website isn't a brochure. It's the operational proof of the organization's core claim: that it is the definitive source for its industry.
Challenge
The Association's digital presence had to project authority across complex content domains while remaining maintainable by a small communications team. That combination is where association sites usually fail: either the content model is rich enough to represent the work and too complex for editors, or it's simple enough to use and everything gets flattened into undifferentiated pages.
Every new initiative (a sustainability campaign, a policy push, an annual statistical release) needed a web presence, and the existing pattern required engineering involvement each time. At association scale, that turns the website into a queue.
Approach
Nikkio worked alongside Yes& as senior engineer on the Drupal implementation. The content model was built around how the Association actually publishes: reports, position papers, statistical releases, news, and member-only resources modeled as distinct types with their own fields, workflows, and presentation, because a policy brief and a press release are different instruments, and a site that treats them identically stops being navigable as a source of record.
The second focus was editorial leverage. Landing pages and initiative microsites were built from reusable components that editors compose, so a new campaign gets assembled rather than re-engineered. The editorial experience got the same attention as the public one: the right field in the right context, sensible defaults, nothing that requires a training manual to publish a page.
Results
The Association's communications team publishes at its own cadence, without engineering in the loop for routine work. New initiatives launch on the existing component system, and the platform continues to serve as the public face of the U.S. aluminum industry.
The deeper result is structural: the content model matches the organization's actual editorial output, which is what keeps a site authoritative as it grows instead of accumulating into sprawl.
